If anybody's wondering...
I think it's good to know about which types of crops like what kinds of soil. ex: tomatoes like soil thats acidic, sweet corn likes soil thats also acidic (but less than tomatoes) and lettuce likes neutral to basic soil. know your absolute, vital and trace nutrients.
To test soil ph, I suggest you do a 1:5 ratio of soil:distilled water, let it sit or shake it up and then stick the ph paper in.
That's about all I know... Anything else I missed?
It's my school's first time to compete and I am a complete newbie.

I was at an invitational and the envirochem test was weird....it had pictures of wilting plants and asked what they were deficient in.... does anybody have any good links or something that could help if anybody ever comes across these types of questions again?

So what have people's invitational and regional tests for this event been like? At my invitational, this event was canceled, which sucks because it's the main event that I needed a practice in...

we had a written test, which was a waste b/c my partner and i studied to actually test soil.

So what should be included in our "cheat sheet" if we're going to have to be prepared for anything?

know your nutrients, ph, how a plant reacts to different amounts of different types of nutrients... i may be missing things. like i said earlier, im a newbie and first timer a competing in scioly.

i think i would be kinda both. it depends on the test writer.

Really you only need to know the ones that directly relate to the nutrients and pollutants in this event (NPK, Al, Mg, Cl...). And likely all you need to know about it is just why they are necessary/pollutants, remediation of, and maybe some nutrient cycling if it directly relates to soil chem. This should be on your note sheets anyways, so you don't even have to memorize any of it.

How would magnesium have to do with soil?

It's a macronutrient. It's in chlorophyll, part of many enzymes, and helps nitrogen fixation in legumes. So you'd test to see if there was a good concentration in soil for plant growth.

My main source for info for this was going down the Rules sheet and typing what I didn't know into google.

That, plus a chapter out of my AP Bio book. But that was just dumb luck that it happened to be the Chapter we were working on the week of Regionals.
