See my wiki. That is the extent to which you need to understand dirt for this event.ampy1234567 wrote:Hm do we need to know anything about the soils other than like identifying by average particle size and the color of the soil is if silica or iron is present?

Re: Crime Busters B
First time doing this event -- can anyone recommend where to buy the chemistry equipment? I looked at Ward's and it seems super expensive for what you get! Our team is really on a budget... help!

Re: Crime Busters B
You probably don't need to buy a lot of stuff. If your team has competed before there is probably things left over from last season you can use. You can also check with your schools science teachers/department and see if they have any of the things you need and will let you borrow. In terms of samples, you can probably find some cheap ones if you look around. I know someone mentioned getting fabric samples for fibers from craft stores, and getting hair samples from people/pets. Several of the powders you can get cheap at the grocery store (salt, sugar, gelatin, etc). Hope this helped!geedee wrote:First time doing this event -- can anyone recommend where to buy the chemistry equipment? I looked at Ward's and it seems super expensive for what you get! Advice on buying HCl
I am planning on buying HCl from amazon as shown as the following link:
http://www.amazon.com/Concentrated-Hydr ... loric+acid
Is this good enough? Do I need to dilute it in anyway to get 1M of HCl? What is 1 mole of HCl?
