For people who took Ento at state level, were the tests still all multiple choice or did they introduce free response?

At least at my state it was a mix of both. It was pretty much the same as regionals except that there were live specimens as well.

The tests I've seen are mainly ID-based (so mostly FRQ, with a few matching/MC)

My state test was the same as regionals but with live specimens and they introduced internal anatomy as well.

Does anyone actually know how to identify Nymphalidae (with just a normal picture that doesn't show you how many legs it has)?

Does the order Orthoptera undergo gradual metamorphosis(paurometabolous) or incomplete metamorphosis(hemimetabolous)? I've seen multiple sources with different answers.

I'm fairly certain they are hemimetabolous.

On soinc.org under B or C events, go to the Entomology link. There is a list of all of the insects that you will need to know for the upcoming competitions.

I placed first in regionals for entomology, and basically, BEETLES BEETLES BEELTES. It's always that beetles, and I suggest that you sharpen your Diptera skills as well. It's also good to just know random facts, as that helped me and my partner a lot.

Know your Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, and Lepidoptera well. They will almost definitely be on the test.
