It all depends on how the heat is utilized, and obviously proximity. This is why the rules for mission need to be in more depth. Too much room for interpretation.colorado mtn science wrote:Since a combustion reaction is ectothermic, it give of heat (anyone who sticks their hands in fire knows this). Although the reaction requires heat to start, it gives off a lot more heat than needed to start it. So if the heat from the electricity doesn't start the next task, the combustion of steel wool should be what does. Any smart judge should recognize this.twisty14 wrote:But what's stopping a judge from saying that the heat from the electrical- thermal is setting off your next step. Thus skipping over thermal-chem-thermal. It's very risky to claim transfers like that.colorado mtn science wrote: Possibly elec-->therm-->chem-->therm. The electricity heats the steel wool which starts the combustion reaction which releases more heat. Be careful though, because the flame from this may be too large to consider safe, and you may be tiered down. It's probably better to use a match.

I heard Ward Melville had a 18x18x18 perfect score, perfect time.scramblingman wrote:Does anybody know how the best missions scored for NY states?

Re: Mission Possible C
Ward Melville was barred from competing and as such we did not fully complete our Mission. However, our partially built device, if it was finished to the specs of our designs and our independent tests of transfers while prototyping, would have been a 24x26x18 box with perfect sort, perfect time, and all but one EM transfer.
I know that one can never claim a device that hasn't actually been built in its entirety, but I do have confidence we could have achieved this level device. We conducted extensive testing of isolated transfers in our design phase and built many in previous iterations.
Unfortunately due to the other demands on the team due to the events of the past few weeks regarding our disqualification, we put building on the back burner in order to focus on these other concerns.
I'm very disappointed to have been robbed of the chance to compete at the state and hopefully national levels, but I wish you all the best of luck! Great job to everyone else this past weekend in NY.

Nice, that sounds like a formidable device and must've taken a lot of work to put together! I feel really bad for you guys missing out on states and possibly nationals :/olympiaddict wrote:Ward Melville was barred from competing and as such we did not fully complete our Mission. You can probably save some of the ideas for next year though, so good luck!

Re: Mission Possible C
Just wanted to get your guys' opinion on something -
Let's say a team had three chemical transfers. If they had to touch the device to cause the first of the three transfers to complete, would they lose 30 points, or would they lose 10 points (the second two transfers become the first and second instance of a chemical to ______ transfer for that run)?

Re: Mission Possible C
Hey folks - trying to settle a debate: If a balloon inflates via chemical reaction and flips an electrical switch to continue the transfer, is this Chemical->Mechanical->Electrical, or Chemical->Electrical?
