Re: Experimental Design B/C
I believe they are supposed to provide you with the rubric in the rules; however, it is not the complete rubric by which you will be graded, that is on soinc and should be memorized

Re: Experimental Design B/C
Our team has a policy. It's to always take the rules for an event into the event, so if the proctors are doing something wrong or there's something on a test that has nothing to do with what's on the rules sheet, we can politely show them that they're not supposed to be doing whatever they're doing.fozendog wrote:They should not have let you bring in a rubric with you, but they have every right to provide each team with one. As Mortem said, it's always good to memorize it!SOnerd wrote:I have only taken 1 test, at an invitational. They let us bring in the rubric to use during the test.
Will they continue to let teams at the regional and state level?

I take a folder with the rules and with rules clarifications for all the events. I had to use them a lot a regionals. Our team has a policy. Anyone here taken the test at states?? I am thinking I'll memorize it, but have the state proctors let you take it in?fozendog wrote:They should not have let you bring in a rubric with you, but they have every right to provide each team with one. Re: Experimental Design B/C
With some tests, they'll give you headings for sections on the sheet of paper telling you what to write down, so that can be helpful.SOnerd wrote:Anyone here taken the test at states?? I had a conflict at an invite (I know)and couldn't do Experimental Design. I had brought the rubric to the last competition, but I thought my partner had it for this one. Around 8, before events started, he asked me if I had the rubric. He hadn't brought his, and I had forgotten mine.
He ended up copying the entire thing on paper.

Re: Experimental Design B/C
With regards to the rubric discussion:
My team *always* memorized the rubric and never took it in with us. You never know if the event supervisor is going to allow you to bring in the rules/rubric or not. Personally, if I were running the event, I would not allow teams to bring them in. The rules are pretty clear on the "no notes" issue, and the rubric is about the only thing a team would put on their notes since everything else is up in the air. (I guess you might include some equations or something).
Anyway, I wouldn't allow teams to bring in the rubric, but I would include section headers for each part like Astroknight suggests. That's what happened most of the time I did this event (and I did this event a lot)
You're best off memorizing it, in my opinion. Another thing to keep in mind is that some states have slightly different rubrics from the national one, (I'm pretty sure Kansas does) so at regional and state competitions you'll want to check on that.

Oh, also, you should list the materials you use for measurement. You can be penalized for not writing enough, but you can't be penalized for writing too much. (This is true in almost every event)

Where would you find the special rubric on the Kansas SO website?zyzzyva980 wrote:With regards to the rubric discussion:

Re: Experimental Design B/C
Probably in the same place as the ID event state list (i.e., Entomology's state list), which I'm also unable to find but 99% certain is on the site. It's been so long since I looked around the Kansas site. We just got the rubric from our coach, so it's possible it was just something sent to all the registered teams' coaches. Not entirely sure about any of that, though.
