Science Olympiad Classes

I'm pretty sure that at my school, any teacher that runs and extra curricular activity gets paid a little extra. That means, that yes, the Science Olympiad coaches at my school are paid a little bit, but I'm not sure how much (obviously).

You think so? I sort of doubt it. I think I heard them say that they just volunteer once.

In my class i will tell you that half of the class would rather play butterfly games on the internet that study for events. Sad thing is that this inculdes the team captin. that leaves half of the class that has to "pick up the slack" and take over for the half that would rather play butterfly internet games instead of studing which really butterfly me off cause i want to make it to State this year and that dream is getting dimmer and dimmer each class.

well i have not shouted at anyone yet but i mean my coach needs to be a lot harder on grading. I guess the real reason is the same reason a lot of people were in the class last year. They thought it was an easy A but if the coach graded a lot harder that it would be a lot better it would also be good if we could hand pick who was in the class so we could do better and have hard working students in the class.

our workdays are after school and my coach doesnt do much in disipline so i have to control my team mates and keep them on task

I'm opposed to it being a class in the sense that you get a grade for it. But if it was to replace a study hall period, that would be good.

Right now you could use a study hall to work on S.O, but if you needed anything from the room, our coach would have to have that period free. And since everyone has different free periods, it doesn't serve the purpose of getting the entire team together.

Our school pays advisers of clubs...that covers everything from S.O. to honor societies and sports. Don't know the exact figure (it's probably public records, but I don't care to look it up), but I know it's not a lot. I'd hope a coach would continue to do it regardless of the money.

i think they do get paid, but the good coaches don't get paid nearly as much as they should for the time and effort they put in.

I agree Sci O shouldn't be a class but i wont be heard in my school so it is a pigeon class

I'm almost positive that they get paid. Yes, they have to volunteer to run an extra curricular, but they get paid still (I think).

In regards to the class, for schools that really want to do well and be competitive, a class would be good I would think. For most schools though, I think it's just better as an after school thing.

Why are we all coming up with theories for only FM? Surely there have to be other schools like them?

And why are coaches paid? No coach I know gets paid.

On Long Island, almost all club advisers get paid. Just not very much.

Well, I've heard my SO coach, chess coach, and soccer coach say to the team that "they're not getting paid to do this" after we have a bad practice or game. So unless they're lying, which I highly doubt they're doing, they volunteer for the post. I don't think anyone else here gets paid to coach a team, but I could be wrong. The ones I know don't.

I think my coaches get paid (the head ones), but it's so small that it's pretty much insignificant.

I think that it would be a really good idea. I mean doing SO all day instead of school....... I'm in seriously.
Also it would give(Science Olympiad) students more time to study. It would kinda be like study hall. In addition it would allow non-SO students to get a whiff of the good life........
