Ok, so on the list i know that the ones with the "*"'s on them mean you have to know the life cycle. But, for the one's that don't require this, do we still have to be prepared to know the different stages, or just adult?

Re: Entomology B/C
The asterisk would be redundant if that were the case. For all those that don't have asterisks, we only need to know what the adult form looks like. We might need to know what type of metamorphosis they have, or something like that. But we won't have to identify an insect based on its larval/nymph form if it doesn't have an asterisk.Cjkowalcz wrote:Ok, so on the list i know that the ones with the "*"'s on them mean you have to know the life cycle. Re: Entomology B/C
Hey everyone, I'm having some trouble finding a family in the NWF book, and I noticed some family and orders are combined in the book and separated on the Official Insect List. Mallophaga and Anoplura are combined as Phthiraptera in the NWF book. Also, I can't seem to find Gryllacrididae(camel crickets) or Fulgoridae(fulgorid planthoppers) in the book. Oh, and Phasmatodea is Phasmida or vice versa?! Lastly, I think ambush bugs are combined with assasin bugs in the NWF guide, so it's only Reduviidae and no Phymatidae. Please help me! I know I'm supposed to go by the Official Insect List and the Audubon Guide, not the NWF one, but what do I do? Should I print out a separate reference sheet for that particular family/order? Thanks.

Re: Entomology B/C
Camel crickets are in the book under Orthoptera on page 103. I haven't been able to find fulgorid planthoppers in NWF either, and I noticed those other issues you said too.
On your notesheet, you can put a table with the official insect list, so then even if the insects are labeled differently in NWF, you'll know which names should be used in competition. To make up for the fact that some insects aren't in the book at all, you could add extra info about those to your notesheet. Depending on your style of notesheet, having pictures of insects not in NWF would probably take up too much space, so just make sure you know how to identify all of those super well.

Re: Entomology B/C
Never mind. Skimmed your post over and missed the fact that you have one. In that case, I would recommend that you purchase an audobon guide so as to avoid this problem. Phasmotodea for example is a recent change to the taxonomy and is poorly standardized in my experience. I have not used the NWF guide and am not familiar with its layout, however I would not use it in this event, due to the taxonomic differences.

Re: Entomology B/C
Actually thinking of Blattodea in that instance but it probably applies to Phasmatodea anyway

Ummmm... How are people tabbing their field guides, and what are they putting on cheat sheet. I have the audoban, if it matters
