-Nothing\'s gonna get deleted. We\'re gonna be like three little Fonzies here. And what\'s Fonzie like? Come on, what\'s Fonzie like?
-Cool?
-Correctamundo. And that\'s what we\'re gonna be. We\'re gonna be cool. Now, I\'m gonna count to three, and when I count three, you let go of your mouse, and back away from the keyboard. But when you do it, you do it cool. Ready? One... two... three.

Let's start out with an easy one. Fill in the blanks below.
1. Adenine bonds with thymine (in DNA), and guanine bonds with _______.
2, In RNA, Adenine bonds with _________.
3. What is the difference between a purine and a pyrimidine?

2. Uracil
3. Purines have two rings, while pyrimidines have one ring, so purines are twice as wide as pyrimidines

Re: Heredity B/Designer Genes C Question Marathon
Its not my turn but since its been a couple weeks im just gonna ask the next question.
In what direction does Dna polymerase add the nucleotides in dna replication ?( 5 to 3 or 3 to 5)
Why does this cause a problem in the lagging strand? Because of this, what results in the lagging strand?

Re: Heredity B/Designer Genes C Question Marathon
I always want to answer based on the parental strand instead of the newly synthesized one and say that it goes 3'->5', instead of 5'->3'(I think this is the answer you're looking for). The lagging daughter strand is running 3'->5', and the DNA polymerase can only go 5'->3', so the polymerase is forced to code short segments at a time, called Okazaki fragments

Re: Heredity B/Designer Genes C Question Marathon
An operon is a group of genes or a segment of DNA that functions in a coordinated matter consisting of an operator, promotor, and structural genes.jjetpack wrote:Define an operon

What does the lacI (<-- uppercase i) gene do?
The structural genes of the lac operon are Lac Z (beta-galactosidase enzyme), Lac Y (permease enzyme), and Lac A (acetylase enzyme).
The lacI is the regulatory gene. It produces mRNA which in turn produces a repressor protein, which can then bind the the operator of the lac.

I have a question! What unwinds the DNA strand? What is a Replication Fork? And, what is an Okazaki Fragment?
