Re: Disease Detectives B/C
Are there any new formulas we have to know? There's already a LOT of stuff to memorize in this event. I would be completely doomed without my one sheet of notes, and my school tryouts don't allow notes....help!

Re: Disease Detectives B/C
Will we be expected to have the tables of statistical significance (with different levels of confidence) on our reference sheet, or will the event supervisor provide us with them?
Also (this is for Div C only), can anyone make sense of the last three tests on the statistics hand-out? It's really dense and I wound up just looking it up myself

Yes. The rules specifically discuss rate adjustment (direct and indirect) and Mantel-Haenszel. I don't know if you will see them on regional tests, though.Jajamola88 wrote:Are there any new formulas we have to know? There's already a LOT of stuff to memorize in this event. The rules say "basic statistical methods." To me, Chi square is basic. Fisher's exact test etc. are not. The handout comes from national, though, so I would be prepared to see those at that competition. Since Mantel-Haenszel is specifically mentioned in the rules, you might see that as well - although I would not have predicted mantel-Haenszel Chi Square, but MHRR and MHOR. Just throw the formulas on you sheet, and understand when and why they are used.Crazy Puny Man wrote:Will we be expected to have the tables of statistical significance (with different levels of confidence) on our reference sheet, or will the event supervisor provide us with them?

Re: Disease Detectives B/C
For the Z-test and T-test, should we just know under which circumstances each test is used? And do we need to be able to calculate the T-score?
Because it looks like there are lots of different formulas that can be used to approximate the T-score under different circumstances

The Disease Detectives Wiki is always a good place to start, as is the event page on soinc.org. Basically, this event focuses on epidemiology, so you should be able to examine various aspects of how diseases spread, etc. Can't say I've done this event myself, but plenty of people who have contributed to the Disease Detectives Wiki, and you can learn a lot from it.

Try taking a look at the 2014 training PowerPoint on the national website (link).3141592653589792 wrote:I do NOT Understand this event. Can someone help me?

Oh, it should work now. I apparently don't know how to copy-paste.3141592653589792 wrote:I am sorry, but the link does not seem to work.
