FYI, we've come in fourth as States two years running with a Bot using only Vex motors for the drive. When we have lost it has usually been because someone got under us, not because we lacked power. The only team to outpower us has been the Brentwood cordless screwdriver bot, who ends up eliminating us every year at regionals and States.

the vex kits can handle pushing the 2.5kg maximum weight with no problem.

However, its undeniable that they are still fairly "weak" motors in comparison to the competitors.

Just from the match with stuy, it was obvious that my bot was at a severe disadvantage.

He was faster and could definitely out maneuver me. Lol i was just bigger, and probably heavier.

My bot was pushing 2.41kg, that is basically why i was scared if the judge called a tie.

I would have been screwed haha.

And btw, this was my first year doing sumo bot, i probably played 6 short matches in total with our team b bot.

I just play xbox alot lmao XP. and im using alot liberally. havnt really had time lately

I did the beveling with a file the night before. OK, I think it might have been after midnight, so the morning before. It's quite rough. I think I could have made it better if I had sanded it with something finer or maybe fire-polished it (OK, maybe not). I need to add something to the design that would allow me to adjust how much sideways tilt the scoop has. The left side was a bit off the floor.

I'm excited for states too. Dozo, THHS and Stuy have different Sumo Bots blocks, so there's a chance we could all make finals. That would be awesome. :P

Oh my gosh, that most have taken quite some time, try a dremel next time if anything.

That would be very interesting, if we all made it to the finals. But I am afraid. States is just on a whole new level.

And I have never competed at states or regionals for that matter until last sat. haha.

To be honest, I was not to impressed with THHS's sumo bot.

It is just way to hard to actually make that whole lifting arm concept to work.

They were able to get under my shield with no problem, but the arm was way to slow to actually do anything.

Also, I still cannot believe that student from THHS cheated right in front of his judge.

yeah, I'm excited for states also, I decided to completely redesign my bot though (old one, http://letsmakerobots.com/node/4834)
my plan is to quadruple the torque by finding some better motors

Williamsville N. got second in 2007, but I wasn't very impressed by their bot. Camden's Tamiya + double-sided foam tape tracks bot last year was crappy looking, but they did beat me so I can't say much. JFK was third or fourth last year, and I assume Red Creek can build well for this. I think my bot (Stuyvesant) might be the one with the most pushing power and decent speed, but has a crappy driver (me) and might not be able to get under everything.

Will North only took 8th at regionals in Sumo Bots, if that means anything.
