We got 7th in Experimental Design! It had to do with probability. We had to add mass to a coin and see how it effected whether it landed on heads or tails. Sure, I wanted a medal, but considering our team has only been to states twice (ever), I think we did good!
2014 Rustin Invitational:
Entomology: 5th
Experimental Design: 1st
2014 Regionals:
Entomology: 3rd
Meteorology: 2nd
Experimental Design: 1st
2014 States:
???
Medal Count: 14 (Hoping for 15 after my last B-division States ;))

That's a lot better than us! Then again, that doesn't sound too hard. How did your team do?

We did alright. Are team isn't really to the point where we are a huge threat at states, but we're beginning to excel at the regional competition. Also, the way the experimental design topic was worded was confusing. It said, "how does mass added to a coin effect the number of times it lands on heads or tails in a period of flipping it for 1 minute?" At first, I thought that the probability wouldn't be effected, but then I realized it meant if you added mass to one side of the coin. But still, it was confusing and I had a block for the first 5 minutes.

AP Statistics! Z proportion testing / chi square would've gotten you bonus points (well it would be if I was grading it :P), I don't know if division B gets anything special for those that do. You can have your null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis and predict which one will take place :)

That sounds like fun! ...But exactly how would you determine the Level of Significance?

~5% rule? Doing what is reasonable for how important the matter of the problem asked.
I know certain scientific calculators can do the z-test, (linear regression, other tests would be nice too), would make the conclusion etc much stronger than simply stating summary statistics.

Wow, thanks! We just covered this in math class last week, but I've never thought about using/testing the null hypothesis for something... but for calculators, since we're only allowed a scientific calculator for ED, can we still do that? The only calculators that I know of that can do the z-test and others are graphing calculators... should I bother to invest in a new scientific calculator that can do more advanced tests?
