State of the Wiki: November 2012

Post by zyzzyva980 »

You may have noticed some changes on the wiki in the past month. We’ve been adding some new templates and features to help identify and fix trouble spots. On the Needs Work Wiki page, in particular, we’ve added a table outlining what problems we’re having. (see below)

Additionally, we’re starting a monthly feature here to keep you, our primary editors, up to date on wiki happenings. We’re proud to announce we’ve already seen progress in our trouble areas since the addition of the Maintenance Statistics table:

November 21

December 1

Change:
-1 Stubs
-1 Outdated Pages
-1 Orphaned Pages

Here is our list of editors from November. First, a graphical representation of editors by number of edits, and then by the number of characters involved in their edits. Note that administrative edits, among other edits, are not included on the list. Also, some edits (such as minor reformatting after a major edit) have been lumped together. The graphs aren’t perfect, but are a good representation of who has been putting effort into the wiki recently.
Note: If you do not wish to appear on graphs in the future, tell a staff member (me) or stop editing the wiki. (We’d prefer the first option).

If you’re looking for things to work on in December, here are some suggestions:
This month, the focus is on outdated pages. You can identify outdated pages as those with this template:

Event wikis that still need updating for this year’s rules include the Chem Lab Wiki, Mission Possible B Wiki, Robot Arm Wiki, Technical Problem Solving Wiki, and the Thermodynamics Wiki. Many of these pages only need simple updates for the rules, requiring less than five minutes of your time.

TL;DR? Edit the wiki.

How do you revise the event's that are no longer active? e.g. Bottle Rockets.

That's my mistake- I misread this year's event listings for B Division. That will be taken care of.

Can I publically organize some sort of wiki help day for certain events? (Meaning advertising it on the forums.)

Yes. You may also consider starting and organizing the project similar to Operation Wikifire. Some events already have projects like this, so check first.

That's a good idea. How would I do that?

You...post? If what you're saying is you want to tackle specific events, I think that's hard because everyone has different events. For example, I could work on, say, Food Sci or Metric Mastery (topics I've posted in), but, if you want me to work on Gravity Vehicle or Egg Drop, I'm almost useless. See the issue?

This is sort of unrelated, but do you guys think it would be a good idea to start creating a wiki page to compile a list of all of the invitationals?

Edit: grammar

If you want to, I don't see why not. Practically speaking, however, it has limited use, though it wouldn't be hard to make if you left it up to each state to get their invites up. I could add IL's, for example. That aside, invites of national interest are already listed on the National site.

I think since there is already a category for Invitational tournaments, an additional page seems unnecessary. What exactly did you have in mind?
