http://www.scioly.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=121&t=3036 This is the link to the study marathon from last year. You can see that it was an active thread all through the year. The thread is locked now, but you can still see it.

These practice questions will be very helpful for preparing for the event. Thank you for posting the link.

Hi I'm new here, and I competed in my state meet last year, and there were questions about shapes of the minerals (like conical, etc) that really threw my teammate and I. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can find resources for this type of question?
Thanks!
*ps I know what the words mean, I was just wondering if there was a uniform list or a resource where I can find it*

What?

Okay, I may not be the best Rocks person in the world, but I can't think of much of anything that comes to mind for that. The only characteristic that I can think of at the moment without looking at my binder notes is crystal systems or something of the like. Do you have more examples?

Wikipedia is a good place to start I think, then follow the cited links for more detail and specific information. There's a number of times where I just word hop around there and find cool little nuggets of information.

What is the difference between double refraction and birefringence (or, refraction vs. refringence?)

They're synonyms. It would still be a good idea for you to know both of them for tests.

What does it mean when they put Goethite/ Limonite.. They're very similar but they are still two different minerals... :?
