Today, I opened my Aquifers Box and out came a smell so stinky, I almost fainted. What would be causing this bad smell and have you encountered this before?

I would say its wet gravel. Thqt happened to me, and we figured out it was wet gravel.

I recommend using a cloth bag to carry all of your Aquifers supplies, instead of a box. It'll reduce the chances of your stuff growing mold (unless you store wet gravel/sand in plastic bags, which you probably shouldn't do). I've seen teams lug around HUGE plastic boxes for their aquifers stuff, and half their boxes are practically empty. I just use a large cloth bag and it can store all my stuff fine, plus it's much easier to carry.

We make a filter with rocks, sand, paper towels and other materials like that. Thats how we demonstrate it and you have to kinda play around with the materials in the filter depending on what you are using as a conatminant. Also we explain different techniques such as bioremedation, but we don't demonstarte them because theres just not enough time to. Hope that helps some

We use charcoal in a cup and let the colored water sit the whole time period and show it to the judge at the end.

Where did you get that information? Remediation was a concept that had to be shown at Nats last year - you only had to show one kind (but it was worth 3 points based on how well it was demonstrated). No one knows what concepts they will pick this year....

Not necessarily, but that is true. We can expect some general ranges of concepts that will appear at Nats(last year didn't surprise me). Hydrologic cycle, remediation/polution, porosity/permeability, well types/uses, etc.

Anyone have a fool-proof way of insuring that the well pumps water (in your mini-aquifer)? Mine didn't work last time infront of the judges, but I just said it was beacause groundwater moves slowly....

Also, anyone know where to find good groundwater maps? They had some at regionals and I want to practice for states.

Before I go on, I pump water from in a cup,so there is water all ready in the pump. I also have a piece of fabric over the end so no rocks stop it. I also make sure the pump is fully submerged in water beforehand. this way, at least there is some water to pump out, no rocks get stuck, and it will definitely flow. hope this helps!

Well...maybe try it beforehand? Make sure your well works the day you pack your aquifer?
