Scores from last year
Hello, I am new to Science Olympiad. Does anyone know what the winning score was last year at nationals? What is a good score for regionals? Thank you!
Re: Scores from last year
For C division last year, I believe the winning score was about a 48. 2nd place had an efficiency of 45.
This year, the scoring formula is slightly different. For regional tournaments, your score is equal to (Load supported/Mass of tower)*(Height of tower-5). Our towers are currently sitting at a shade below 10g at 70cm high. We have only loaded them to 12kg, but we are confident that they can hold all 15kg during competition. Based on these measurements, we should get a score of about 97.5.
Depending on how competitive your region is, I would guess an efficiency above 60 or 70 would put you in good shape for medal contention. A few other members have posted their results here and here, if you're willing to sift through the posts for a bit.
Best of luck! There's plenty of information on the boards to help you get started with Towers.

What do you guys think would be a good score for B division? My brother is on towers and his first one had an efficiency of about 68.2 .... Good? Bad? I think it's pretty terrible, but I am not sure.
Thanks a bunch.

As noted in the General Discussion thread, Score and Efficiency are different; score is Efficiency times a height factor. You're saying had a score of 68.2.Costarica wrote:What do you guys think would be a good score for B division? My brother is on towers and his first one had an efficiency of about 68.2 .... Good? How good is good/how bad is bad, how bad is terrible- all depends on how serious you are. The recent report of Stevensen getting a score of 120 seems to be the current upper end of "good." I wouldn't call a score of 68.2 "bad."

Re: Scores from last year
I was at a competition in December where the winning C Div. tower won with a score of about 134.
When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it happen, and those who wonder what happened.

That I would for sure call "good."Paradox21 wrote:I was at a competition in December where the winning C Div. tower won with a score of about 134.
At a 70cm height, that would be a hair under 7.3gr, carrying full. At a 50cm height (for comparison to last year) that would mean a 5.05gr tower, carrying full - i.e., second place at Nationals last year.

EDIT: Not sure if Dox saw this in SoCal or North Carolina, though...

OK well i'll be nowhere near those since my teammates do not work very hard, the only 1st place medal we saw was from towers, yay!! then again, it was an invite and a bad one at that if an efficiency of 75 could get a first. but it was my first tower and I'm proud of it.
