Re: Sounds of Music C
This is my first year on Sound of Music and I was wondering, am I allowed to build an instrument that exceeds the allowable range or does it have to be within the allowable range? (e.g. can I build a 3 octave instrument even though the allowable range is only slightly over 2?)

You should take note of the bolded words in 4.b.ii in the rules (which are new this year). You might also want to look at the official scoring sheet we've posted at http://soinc.org/sounds_of_music_c

Re: Sounds of Music C
So I think we plan on making a flute- plans drawn out- and maybe a guitar... but it seems like it will be hard to tune an get the correct notes

What if its not an instrument part? Would just like a peice of PVC pipe be allowed to be used?chalker wrote:How can a piece be premade yet not manufactured by a company? Like if a part were premade, but not ment for an instrument, could that be used?

There is nothing in the rules that prevents the use of premade stuff like PVC pipe. I'd think general rule #2 (http://soinc.org/ethics_rules) applies. Note if you want an 'official' ruling on something, you should go through the proper channels at soinc.org.

For this (and all events really), you should check out the official event page at soinc.org: http://soinc.org/sounds_of_music_c . There are also individual event pages that are really good here on the scioly wiki (click on the wiki icon at the top of any page).

Re: Sounds of Music C
I don't know about building the harp, but making the strings would be a pain in the neck. Tuning would also be difficult, because it has so many strings. From experience, it takes forever to tune a harp under the best of circumstances.kateak wrote:Do you think it would be difficult to build a harp?

Re: Sounds of Music C
Well, you wouldn't necessarily have to make the strings - in fact, I'd advise against it because it'd be a huge hassle. Somewhere in the rules, I remember that it specifically allows commercial strings...but as buttersideup said, tuning so many strings would take a lot of time and it'd probably go out in like 15 minutes anyways.
Which brings me to a harp joke: Harpists spend half their time tuning and the other half playing out of tune.
