There are companies that make wood-based boards specifically for use in skate ramps which I imagine would work quite well. Hunt around online, you'll surely find a few good sources.

Please ignore this question if the rules prohibit it, but are we allowed to use a skate ramp surface, but just build a separate frame ourselves?

It seems so when the rules say,
3. b. "... on a competitor provided ramp."
Thats all that is stated about your question that I see in the rules.

Well, there's nothing in the rules (that I can remember, at least) that prohibits competitors from using a pre-built ramp...just as long as it fits (with the car) within the given dimensions.

Right, but I was specifically talking about purchasing your own surface, building the support structure and then attaching the surface to whatever shape you have.

fishman was answering a different question I asked, Chalker. So it is legal to use a prebuilt ramp (not made by students), correct?
Although that would take the fun out of the event huh? ;)

I think the written rules make that pretty clear (check the first sentence of the general event description), but if you still have a question after looking those over, submit an official clarification.
