Re: Sounds of Music C
Range is likely still restricted.

Just type. Range is still spelled out in the rules.Bogoradwee wrote:Quick question. You said that there's no restrictions on instruments. does that include range, or just type?

Re: Sounds of Music C
probably the same as last year? don't think range ever gets changed because last year the range was the same as when sounds was ran 3 or so years back.

Re: Sounds of Music C
The ranges do get changed from year to year, so don't expect them to be the same as last season. Yes, they were the same last year as 2008, but they were different between 2007 and 2008 when the event ran in back to back years.

The range is the same this year. We did change the required song though.JimY wrote:The ranges do get changed from year to year, so don't expect them to be the same as last season. Re: Sounds of Music C
Got the rules manual today and it says in the description section: "Prior to the competition each team must build two different instruments, of any type, based on ..." Going back to the 2008 rules, it says in the description section: "Prior to the competition each team will build two types of musical instruments [aerophone, cordophone, ideophone, or membranophone] ..."chalker wrote:quizbowl wrote:Where did you find that out?personasaurus rex wrote:ohhh yeah you guessed it, strings are back!
Good question, since the final rules aren't published yet, although information about them is slowly filtering out. To help prevent the spread of misinformation, I'd like to clarify a bit: the rules this year do not require specific types of instruments. You can build whatever types you want, as long as 2 different types are used.
The 2008 rules makes it very clear that you are to build two different types of instruments. The 2012 rules don't seem to say the same thing and that two instruments of the same type can be built, as long as they aren't the same instruments (e.g. can't have 2 guitars with one playing in each required range, but could have a violin and a cello). Am I out to lunch here, or is this interpretation right?

If you are, then I am too, although I do wonder whether whether a violin and cello pair would earn full points under 5.e.i (originality/creativity) and/or 5.e.ii (appropriate varieties).

This is the key. We explicitly didn't want to mess with instrument classifications anymore since there were so many clarifications we had to respond to. The 2 instruments need to be 'different'. If they are too similar to each other then you won't get full points for variety / originality / creativity.*
*Standard disclaimer about this is not an official clarification, etc. If you want 'official' statements on this issue please submit a question to the soinc.org clarifications page.

Re: Sounds of Music C
I'm just happy that we aren't being forced into things to the extent of last season's rules. We'll most likely do two types for each of our teams and not chance it under those particular scoring categories. Good stuff.
