I guess my team will have to start fundraisers when SO starts again so we can get some money to sign up for Invitationals. I don't think my coach even knows what Invitationals are. What are some fundraiser ideas? I could just ask for donations from kids in the school and set up something for that and say that when the SO team does well and makes it to States or maybe even Nationals (probably impossible in NY) we'd gain regonition for our school and maybe the Spirit Award thing at Nats. It's a long shot.

Car washes! Everyone thinks that my school does so well because we're rich and the school funds us all the time, but we really don't. We have a car wash in the beginning of the year, and our yearly budget is that plus whatever we have saved from the year before. You'd be surprised how generous some people driving by can be.

Bake sales are a good idea, we did that earlier in the year and raised around $500 dollars for the team.

We used to do magazine sale fundraisers (actually, I think they still do at Gelinas). We only saw some fraction of the profits, but it was relatively easy because the logistics were mainly taken care of by the fundraising company. I forget the name of the company we used, but there are hundreds, probably thousands of pre-organized fundraising opportunities like that, if you're interested.

I'd like to try a few of these once SO starts up again. It'd be awesome to try these over the summer. Unfortunately, I don't think my school will ever be serious about SO. My school looks at SO at a club where students just meet together afterschool and learn stuff. I assume that most people think that the kids in SO actually compete in something and make a name for the school.

SUNY-Ulster was a decent place to hold the NY Division B competion. I liked the open spaces and I had never known how much open space there was in NY. I've heard that most of NY is rural but I've only seen the NYC area before the SO state competion. Rarely did I have a cell signal there though.

We stayed there, and I think Gelinas, Murphy and St. Mary's Elementary also stayed there.

He was talking geographically, notice how he also talks about the open space. He wasn't insinuating that most upstaters are rural hicks =)

Exactly. What I meant was that most of the STATE of New York, the landscape and land area, is rural while much of the population of the state is in the small(in land area comparision) metropolitan area. When people hear about New York they think Manhattan, big cities, Long Island, crowded subways, taxi cabs, Queens, etc. When they're not just referring to New York, New York, they're probably referring to or thinking about the metropolitan area like Bronx and Queens. It's a nice place upstate. I'm surprised that the competition wasn't held in an urban area or at one of the numberous colleges in the metro area. I liked the more rural area better because of all the open space and SUNY-Ulster to play frisbee, just run around and have fun when not in an event.
