If you're doing ecology as an event, then yes, you do have to know some things about ecology.lilolme wrote:This is my first time doing SO and I was wondering if there is anything I need to know about ecology.

Start by going to the wiki. Another great tool is the www.soinc.org the ecology link is: http://www.soinc.org/ecology_c

Know the Rule of 70 for doubling time.quizbowl wrote:What are some of the important formulas we should have down?
Unfortunately, I can't remember it right now, though. I think it's something like population growth (in percent)/70 gives you the amount of time it takes for a population to double, but I'm not 100% sure.
Can someone clarify? I forget.

I believe it was the other way around.gneissisnice wrote:Know the Rule of 70 for doubling time.quizbowl wrote:What are some of the important formulas we should have down?

So lets say you had a growth rate of 3.5%
70/3.5 = 20 years
what about population growth? has anyone ever had to calculate carrying capacity?

Yeah it's like 70 divided by r where r represents the growth rate.
From the tests i've seen carrying capacity and population growth are fairly straight forward. The population was 300, one year later it's 348, whats the population growth rate? So some simple dividing. And for carrying capacity they'll usually give you a graph and then ask you what the carrying capacity is so you just have to look at the graph to see where the population starts to level off.
