So apperently CW's are too expensive for our school to buy just to do a few tests... is anyone else having this problem? If so, what are you using as CW's?

Currently we were able to borrow a team mate's pencil bag and fill it with some wieghts so that it is exactly 1kg, then we took two plastic bags and filled them with wieghts so that they are both 1kg each. Then to make the pencil bag 1kg, all you have to is put one or both of the plastic bags into it. It seems pretty accurate, but is there a better way?

You can't make counterweights yourself with ABS or PVC pipe filled with some sort of weight to 1 kg?

Yes there are many possible counterweights.....If money is not an issue go to home depot or any hardware supply store and buy 8ft. of the thickest chain.... have them cut the eight/th and keep the broken links...u will have 9 links of 7 and 9 broken links.....if u have a tight budget try large catfish weights "i think they are like 8-16oz. and are about 2-3$ a piece"

Would you recommend I use the typical fat trebuchet? Do you have any other designs I could suggest to the others at my school to try out?

A FAT trebuchet will work the best because the counterweight falls straight down instead of in an arcing motion. Most likely any other better designs you'll find will violate the energy rule, and I bet the proctors will be picky about that. I would just stick with a FAT if I were you.

thats what you decide you place the box, they give you the projectiles and the CW

Use a sling. It's traditional, more reliable, and you can also have many slings of different lengths.
