I don't follow... there are many places that have similar names... and if my guess is right, we're looking for someone who lives in the place the assassinator was going to, not coming from

A minor setback and ahead I ford. Ford- to cross across a shallow part of a river, so most likely he is traveling from point A to point B, and they are separated by a river.
Traveling from the land of maple sap- point A is "the land of maple sap", may refer to NY, Canada, or Vermont.
Heading far one could say in a way/Ask another, did I travel at all? How can you travel far, and yet not at all? The best answer that I can think of is that point A and point B have the same name, thus he traveled a great distance while staying in the same city (kinda).

And end of a third is what I may say

Four fish, a bear, and a snake I did see
I knew this was the next target but how?

End of a third what? Not sure. I think first we need to solve the first stanza. Perhaps these two points are separated by three miles?
Four fish, a bear, and a snake... what could this be? Once again, not sure, but I don't think that it's constellation anymore.

EDIT: The land of maple syrup is definitely New York. That's where paleo is from, and we can assume that the assassin is coming from there.

I protect myself because as i was googling along, I ran across an article on the snake river. Upon further investigation, i found that "four fish, a snake, and a bear" could refer to the Snake, Bear, 3 forks of the salmon river, and the Salmon falls creek, most of which are tributaries of the Snake River, and all of which reside in my state.
