Civilians lie all the time by saying 'I am the Assassinator!' The Assassinator has the right to lie as much as he/she likes. The only time they MUST tell the truth is on a formal accusation or protection.

Yes, technically you are right, but its very unusual and highly frowned upon if an Assassinator outright lies. I have had to deal with a very serious family emergency today, that superseeded the importance of making the clue.
