Last year, I got thrown on this event literately, an hour before we were supposed to sign up for it.. There were some incredibly easy questions and some that were not as easy.. While it is a Science competition, the physical parts of it aren't bad, and were actually really easy... But we don't practice for this event ever. It's not run at our Regionals. Do teams that actually do well in this event practice, and if so, about how much ?

Our team got a pretty decent place last year at States for Pentathlon (7th), but we never ever practiced and the 4 team members happened to be 4 people who shared an open event slot. So, how you place sorta depends on how lucky you get with the questions and the tasks (i.e. if, say, the DP person gets a geology question instead of one on chem and if the basketball player has to shoot hoops instead of riding a tricycle).

i would like to point that a very good topic to study is newtons laws, that was the group question at regionals and only one of the 22 teams got all three main laws.
It's always tea time somewhere in the world...... Come to think of it... It's my tea time... :D
Events I participate:
chem lab
forensics
forestry
helicopter
sounds of music

see i think the opposite too it should count towards state and nationals because instead of somone being good at one perticular event u have to know a all around knowledge of science
events i have competed in-science crime busters,scrambler battery buggy,penthalon,write it do it,physical science lab,experimental design,wright stuff,disease detectives

zyzzyva98 wrote:To use a terrible analogy that sounds very slightly Shakespearean: Pentathlon is like a person you love, but is from a different family that is enemies with your family. In other words, yeah, it's a fun event, but it doesn't really fit in with the theme of Science Olympiad. Oh, and athletics and nerds are enemies. Here's another bad analogy: Pentathlon is like an imaginary friend; fun to be around but to get anything done you have to forget about "fun" and get down to business. We don't like pentathlon because it's like a filler event, an event that could be replaced with something that has to do with science, instead of shooting a basketball. Yeah, that involves science of some sort, but are you really going to think about it when you're on the clock trying to shoot? I don't think so.
im an athlete [basketball, softball, soccor] and a nerd. im pretty sure im not not enemys with my self

Thrown on, not out.

We don't practice (does Sporcle count?) and we do fairly well.

Incidentally, I also play sports, but that doesn't mean I think this event is a good event that should stick around. As someone else once said on this thread (East, I'm pretty sure) it's not sports olympiad, it's science olympiad. Less focus on athletic challenges, more focus on academic, in my opinion.
