Unfortunately that's just the way it is. Builds are inherently pay to win to some extent, study events somewhat less so. So I would just enter some bare minimum builds that won't get DQed, and try your best at study events.

Iron (Fe), since it's such an important structural material. Also, there's a lot of science and finesse involved in getting iron to have the right properties (hardness, toughness, strength, corrosion resistance, etc.) through alloying, work hardening, and heat treatment.
